How To Import A JavaScript File In Another JavaScript File

How To Import A JavaScript File In Another JavaScript File

In this article, we will explain how to include a JavaScript file in another JavaScript file, similar to the way CSS files are imported using the @import rule.

The most basic way to include a JavaScript file in another file is by using the HTML script tag. To do this, you need to add a script tag in the HTML file where you want to include the external JavaScript file. The script tag should have the src attribute set to the path of the external JavaScript file, like this:

<script src="path/to/file.js"></script>

This method is suitable for including JavaScript files in an HTML page, but it’s not the best way to include JavaScript files in other JavaScript files. A better approach is to use the JavaScript import statement. The import statement allows you to import functions, objects, or entire modules from external JavaScript files.

import { functionName } from './file.js';

You can import the whole file by ommiting the curly braces:

import './file.js';

You can also use the require() function to include a JavaScript file in another file, which is similar to the import statement. This method is commonly used in older JavaScript projects and in Node.js.

const importedFile = require('./file.js');

It’s important to note that both import and require statements should be at the top of the file, before any other statements.
